Last week, the U19 girls Touch rugby team played against Garden International School (GIS). It was their first time playing before summer for the majority of the players who took part in the match. So, it was very much a chance to practice basic skills. Despite the match being our first touch session, everyone was motivated and full of energy to play again after summer. Play was kept simple to give everyone the opportunity to refamiliarise themselves with the game and reminding the players how demanding it can be on fitness, agility and awareness of both teammates and opposing players. In saying this, even after such a long break, it was nice to see how much was remembered from last year’s training.
The team drives were still fast and strong and the ability to work together, creating scoring opportunities redeveloped quickly as well once the matches had commenced. Even though there were some difficulties at the beginning trying to recall the moves, the team quickly came together as the communications on the field were excellent. There were smiles and game faces on and off the pitch, happy to play touch again.
For the first game of the season, we had some really promising play both as a team and from individuals which brings real optimism for what is to come later in the season.
